Tuesday Treats... really late

I know I forgot my Tuesday Treats. So here you go. A late edition...

1929/1930 All Quiet on the Western Front

Honestly.... I couldn't finish it. I think I may have been having an ADD moment and it was just... well... too quiet. So I turned it off and watched Ghostbusters instead.

All Quiet on the Western Front 1930

Netflix: Teenage German soldiers pass from idealism to despair in this poignant, Oscar-winning depiction of survival on the front lines, adapted from an anti-war novel by Erich Maria Remarque and banned in a number of countries during wartime. Awarded Best Picture in 1930, the film has lost little of its original impact, with brutal imagery and a peaceful message that also earned director Lewis Milestone an Academy Award for Best Director.

A Day In The Life...

I have seen several of my fellow bloggers doing this, and even though I know nobody really cares what I do in my day to day life, I have decided to join in because I have nothing else to blog about.... and because I know my only reader, Glenn, will LOVE this  ;) ... so here goes.

*note: this is not my typical day, but rather, a lazy day off of work

5:53 Jumped out of bed... then realized what time it was and went back to sleep. It's my day off, no need to be awake.

9:02 Woke up for real. Let the dog out...and back in, brushed my teeth and grabbed some caffeine.

9:15 Turned on Season 9 of Smallvile... about half way through now, logged into Facebook, and went through the morning routine of texts with a friend.

9:51 Got on Craigslist to look for a dishwasher...

11:14 Found dishwasher and set up time to look at and possibly buy said dishwasher.

11:25 Started Laundry, pissed off some ants with a mound destroyer, dropped netflix movies in the mailbox.

11:47 Made and devoured lunch

12:10 Switched over laundry, continued watching Smallville while wasting time on Facebook and more texting with a friend.

12:50 Looked through my favorite cook book (it's no longer being printed but you can buy it on Amazon) for an idea for dinner... and then realized how much it sucks cooking for one... I guess it will just be sloppy joes or hot dogs again...

1:15 got clothes out of the dryer and put clean wet clothes in the dryer, folded and hung up said dry clothes...and grabbed a RedBull

1:40 Completed season 9 of Smallville, made a Father's Day card... I haven't made a card in a while so I opted for simple, fast, and easy...

1:53 Put ticket stubs from recent events in my keepsake book. Tried, again, to teach my dog to sit... but he's dumb so we just ended up playing, then I laughed as he chased the cats.

2:15 Wondered why I hadn't heard the buzzer on the dryer (hasn't it been a couple hours?), and when I went to the garage, realized I hadn't STARTED the dryer... oops

2:17 Browsed more on Facebook, checked out the local Breaking News... it's been a busy day in Houston. High speed chase, 2 women robbed a Walmart (I don't know why... but I guess Walmart is busy and has lots of cash in the registers), and new DNA evidence was linked to cold cases from the 90s. Oh and then there was that thing about the manhunt for an escaped prisoner... No big deal...

2:50 Spent some time thinking about what it will actually be like to have a dishwasher... it's been SO long. Turned on the actual television and was reminded why I don't watch TV.

3:05 Reverted to the DVD collection and decided on X-Men. Texted some more with friends about current and future happenings.

3:15 Heard the buzzer for the dryer!!! Folded and put away dry towels. And of course I had to stop and smell them first... I love my fabric softener!

3:51 Thought about doing dishes and then remembered I might be getting a dishwasher tonight and I might need something to test it out on.

5:26 Left to look at dishwasher...

6:23 Arrived home with dishwasher for less than asking price. But I will not be installing it tonight. First things first I guess...  :(

6:45 Started raking more pine needles, breaking up limbs and cleaning up backyard before trash goes out

8:33 Came in from yard work

And now I'm sweaty and need to shower and eat dinner... so this is where I will be ending the post, because after I shower and eat I will be doing NOTHING else except watching TV and wasting more time on Facebook

Have a lovely evening and thank you for reading.

I made this a couple of months ago in trade for lawn services  :)

1928/1929: The Broadway Melody

Well I love musicals, so I knew I would enjoy this one.

Favorite Line: These guys aren't paying $5 to look at your face. This is BROADWAY!

The Broadway Melody 1929
NR

Netflix: You'll be tappin' your toes to this early talkie musical (the first musical to win the Best Picture Oscar) that's filled with great tunes by the songwriting team of Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown. Bessie Love and Anita Page are stage-struck sisters who both vie for the affections of song-and-dance man Charles King, with tragic results. Songs include "You Were Meant for Me" and "The Wedding of the Painted Doll." Harry Beaumont directs.

Also Nominated: Alibi, The Hollywood Revue, In Old Arizona, The Patriot

Tuesday Treats

The Customer Is Always Right... Except When They Are Wrong...

Customer: I have a cake to pick up

Me: Sure, What is the name on the order

Customer: Insert name here

Me: (looks for order and can't find it) Could it be under a different name?

Customer: NO! I called here yesterday and placed the order!!! HOW COULD YOU LOSE MY ORDER?!?

Me: Well sometimes people confuse the stores because there are 3 of us within 3 miles. Let me call the oth...

Customer cuts me off: WHY THE HELL WOULD I ORDER IT FROM ANOTHER KROGER?!? THIS IS THE ONLY STORE I SHOP AT!!!

Me: It just happens sometimes ma'am. I'm going to call the other store just to check.

Customer: Whatever. I called THIS store.

At this point the customer gets on the phone and starts yelling at... whoever she is talking to... about how we screwed up and lost her order and how stupid we are... but in not so nice language.

I, meanwhile, get on the phone and call the store down the road...

Guess where her cake is?

Yep.

Me: Ma'am your cake is at the store right down the road. 2 1/2 miles on the right.

Customer: NO! I ordered my cake HERE!

Really???

Now I'm speechless and had to just walk away.

I really was just thinking... Yes. You ordered your cake here but I didn't feel like making it so I called them and had them do it.

Really?

1927/1928: Wings

Prior to watching this film, the only silent films I had seen were City Lights, The Gold Rush and Phantom of the Opera. Charlie Chaplin and Phantom... so yeah... It was different for me, but entertaining.

Wings 1927
NR

Netflix: Wings tells the story of two men (Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen) in love with the same woman (Clara Bow). Their rivalry grows into a wary friendship once they become fellow fighter pilots in World War I. Director William A. Wellman had the full cooperation of the U.S. War Department, which allowed him to film spectacular aerial dogfight scenes. Gary Cooper appears as a veteran pilot.

Also Nominated: The Racket, Seventh Heaven

And the award for Best Picture goes to...

Well, I guess I really don't have much to talk about now that the 30 day movie challenge is over, and yet another reason why I haven't started a blog until recently. But I made a bucket list when I was 19 because I never have motivation to actually complete anything.

One of the things on that list is to watch every movie that has ever won an Academy Award for Best Picture. And since I'm a movie freak and am trying to find new movies that I haven't seen yet, I have decided to finally start this project. Many of them I have seen already but it will be good to have a refresher. If possible I will go in order, starting with the first.

I'm sure I won't be watching one everyday but I will at least have something to hold me accountable to actually compete the list, even though no one really reads this...

Day 30: Your favorite movie at this time last year...

First of all just let me say... WOOHOO! Challenge Complete! I have finally finished this damn thing.

So any who... Day 1 was my favorite movie... of all time... so I would think it would be the same. But if you are wanting to know what movie I watched over and over at this time last year, well... I was still hooked on Star Trek.

I watched it at least a couple times a week for several months... I just couldn't get enough I guess. So yeah... there ya go.

Notable Mention: Boondock Saints II, Whip it, Sherlock Holmes

Day 29: A movie from your childhood:

I know I should be thinking of some cartoon movie, but all I can think about right now is that trail of Reese's Pieces.

So I guess I will be going with E.T.

Yep. Great movie!

Notable Mentions: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Poltergeist, Short Circuit, *batteries not included

Day 27: A movie that made you wish you could act...

Wildthings! hahaha just kidding...

Uhhhh....

Pretty much every movie (that I like) makes me wish I could act. Although some movies make me wish I could act just so I could replace the horrible actresses that were casted and maybe the movie wouldn't suck so bad...

But the first one that pops in my head (and I'm really not sure why) is Romeo and Juliet.

The DiCaprio/Danes version.

I love the way Harold Perrineau played Mercucio. And of course Pete Postlewaite and John Leguizamo. Amazing.

I would like to play Diane Venora's part. She did an awesome job but I think it would be fun. She was crazy.

Actually, I would just love to be a part of a re-make done the way that one was done. Taking a classic play and love story and turning it into something very modern and bad ass...

And I loved that their 9mm said "sword" and "dagger". That was pretty sweet.

another stupid poem...

I'm a poet in my sleep
Intellectual, Inspired, Charismatic
I travel undiscovered islands
smile politely
I swim on the backs
of whales - engulfed
in mysteries

Awake I'm dull
Incompetent, Lazy, but Charismatic
I stay home and watch TV
drift into darkness
where the fall morning's
haze can't reach me

In my sleep, dreams take over
great stories are written
about life
Love, Joy, Success
floating on a smoke puff
into the light of day
where my peace of mind
floats with the breeze

But awake my heart pounds nervously
wondering if anything
will come of this life
Love, Joy, Success?
Now wonder I feel incompetent
on the threshold of dawn
slipping into the chains of reality
Once again I'm dull

Bombdiggity

Ok. First of all just let me say... if you use this word, I don't care how old you are, please stop.

I'm not sure how this came to be, but there are too many elderly people attempting to use urban slang, and this seems to be the one I hear quite often. It was never a good word to begin with and will never be. It makes me shiver every time I hear it.

My mother is one of those guilty of using it (along with saying that something is "da bomb") and I really just want to cry. I thought I taught her better. Do you remember the commercials with Smokey the Bear and "only YOU can prevent forest fires". Well, only YOU can prevent the use of urban slang from 50+ year old white women trying to be cool while going though 'the big change'. Seriously. This is not okay.

There is a woman at my work... we have named her Eviline...

Eviline is a mid- to late-fifty's white woman. She has more than a few psychological problems, but today she was rather irritating. She told me today, on three occasions, that my cakes were "the bomb" or "bombdiggity". She also asked a fellow employ if she had seen the new Tyler Perry movie yet. Perhaps that is where she is learning this language. I'm not sure because I have failed to see any of those films.

I spent the entire rest of the day, along with my department head, attempting to speak in only urban slang just to prove to the rest of the employees how absolutely ridiculous it sounds... but we failed. We are obviously not very well educated in the matter. I know that I have several flaws in the way I speak... I'm from Texas. And I begin a lot of sentences with "so" or "okay". It's a bad habit I have picked up. But I recognize it and am willing to work on it.

But my main concern is for the mothers and grandmothers out there, who are trying to appeal to their nieces or grandkids or children, and only end up making a fool of themselves. I'm not trying to be rude. I'm only trying to help. So PLEASE... help me. Help me put an end to this. If you or someone you know suffers from urban slang syndrome, get them the help they need. Approach them with love. Be caring and supportive. But let them know the dangers.

And remember... only YOU can prevent the use of urban slang from 50+ year old white women trying to be cool while going though 'the big change'.

Day 22: A movie that you watch when you are sad:

I'm just going to start making tings up because this doesn't make since to me. I don't know. Maybe there is somebody out there who has a movie that they pop in that is designated for a certain mood... but not me.

So. A movie for when I am sad. Sin City.
